Though their musical style has changed substantially since its inception in 1998, the band's latest work has been primarily in the vein of Metalcore, Post-hardcore, and considered to be Screamo or influenced by some. Underoath is a Christian band, and are popular among both Christian and secular audiences.

Despite limited airplay on radio and television outlets such as MTV and VH1, the band has achieved Gold Album status with their 2006 album Define the Great Line.
